The cc GY6 ignition system is fairly easy to troubleshoot in the case of malfunction. There are 4 major components that work together to produce spark, if any of these are defective spark will be lost. What we will be doing here is troubleshooting these ignition parts starting at the source, and working towards the spark plug.
To diagnose your ignition system, you will need to do each of the steps in this article, in sequence. Before getting started, take a look at this diagram. Although there are many differences in wiring between models, most GY6 ignition systems work the same as shown in this illustration. A very common cause of no spark is a defective ignition or kill switch. Before beginning to troubleshoot ignition problems, it is best to bypass the switches.
Note the wrapped ignition winding, and trigger module. Ignition Winding: Depending on starve io sandbox mode stator type, you have either 6, 8, or 11 windings. Of these windings, one is dedicated to supplying the CDI with ignition power.
This winding is usually wrapped in white cloth material and sealed over with clear epoxy. Trigger pickup: A simple type of crankshaft position sensor. Sends a signal to the CDI to let it know when to send fire to the plug. This current is stored in a capacitor within the CDI unit. When a signal is received by the trigger pickup passing over the flywheel magnet, the CDI will discharge the stored energy into the wires leading to the ignition coil.
The minimum we have seen working is around 18vAC. Black is neutral, green is input from the CDI. The function of the ignition coil is to multiply the voltage of the power supplied from the CDI, and to send the multiplied power to the spark plug. Troubleshooting the Ignition Coil: Check for 0. The best way to tell if the coil is bad is to perform steps the steps above. If hp elite x3 lap dock raspberry pi is still no spark, the coil is likely bad.
The plug is very rarely the cause of no spark on the GY6.

We have all of these parts.Not charging at all. I pulled the batt and recharged it at 2 amps for 12 hours, which brought the batt voltage up to slightly over 14 VDC. EDIT: The high voltage reading apparently was just a temporary surface charge.
I unplugged the 4-blade type connector from the rectifier and found the yellow wire connector was toast. The plastic on the connector was burned and melted around it. After doing a little research and help from this forum. I learned it was the one that should have been on. I did get real nervouse when shorly after install the temp gauge went out. The connector blades will get cleaned up as well as the plug connectors and will be retried. I should check the voltage coming off the rectifier first. The plug connector to the rectifier was no good and no longer useable. Wires inside were badly fatigued and frayed. The connector plastic too deformed to use again. I don't think the red wire was making proper contact when plugged up. I drew a diagram of the connector plug in the owners' manual for future reference.The cost of a new stator can be hundreds of dollars. Without a good stator, your engine will run poorly or not at all.
This solution completely bypasses the stator by using a 12 volt battery to power the ignition system. It will work on all contact breaker point engines old styleand some electronic controlled ignition newer style ones. The guide is for contact breaker systems. Note that as written this system will bypass the CDI portion of your ignition system if present and replace it with a more traditional one. I devised this system when the stator on my Honda XR got so weak that it couldn't power the spark plug, preventing the engine from running.
While a stator is dying, it can produce a weak spark, causing the engine to miss or run poorly. Symptoms are often worsened as the engine warms up.

Stators & Pickup Coils
I found that the older canister type ignition coil designed for cars work for this application and don't get hot or blow up. This is the lead acid type used for car batteries. They sell small ones for use in dirt bike starters, security system back up power supplies, etc. Capacitor: Any capacitor intended for ignition systems will work. I don't know the technical specification. I used the one that was one that was part of the original ignition system on my dirt bike.
Resistor: This is to protect the ignition coil from receiving too much power. Use a 2 ohm resistor rated in the neighborhood of watts of power. I've worn out plenty of Zippy 1's but besides that she's been super reliable, fun, and fast scooter. Over the summer ofI did run into the problem of having my stator go bad on me. This was covered by warranty and gave me a reason to get a few other service items taken care of. She ran perfectly after that for a few months, but I then started to experience sporadic idle problems where the engine would die while in idle.
After adjusting the idle screw she ran fine. Well I went to take her for a ride the other day and she just didn't want to start. The starter cranked but the engine just wouldn't start.

Had her towed to the shop only to find out that the stator has gone bad again! Thankfully she's still under warranty so I'm not out any money, however it does concern me that this has now happened twice within a year!
Any ideas on what could be causing the stator to go bad? Are there any after market replacements that might be better quality than the replacements the shop is receiving from Genuine?
Back to top. Both the stator ignition coil winding and the trigger pickup coil are relatively easy to test. The original stator in my '09 Buddy last 4, miles, the generator part went out. I took it to the dealer and they put in a new one, and it lasted about 3, miles, the pickup part went bad. I put it in myself, had to make a few custom tools. The NCY is wired a little different, not a big deal but you have to get more wires behind the little holder so it is a little harder to install.
That may just be some bad luck.
While there have been a few threads about stators going bad, most of us haven't had to worry about it. I didn't need to replace mine until almost 32, miles. Some parts just eventually need replacing but having 2 go bad within the warranty period is out of the ordinary.

Using flywheel puller, remove flywheel. We now have direct access to the stator. Important tip 1! Be sure to take a picture of how the stock wires are routed under the clamp. This is for your own reference during installation.
Routing the wires wrong under the clamp will almost certainly lead to wire damage. Important tip 2! Be sure absolutely sure to separate the 4 bolts that attach the fan from the rest of the bolts in this job. If you mistakenly use one of the longer bolts from the shroud, it will catch the windings and damage the stator beyond all use. This will also void the warranty. Remove stator assembly. Remove the trigger pickup module first. Mount the new Stator Be sure to mount the new stator in the same position and orientation as the original.
Mount the Trigger Pickup Route wires under clamp using the picture you took earlier as a reference. Do not clamp the wire leading to the trigger wire pickup. I have yerf dog scout model im tying to figure out if it is an ac or dc on the voltage. I have the same problem as Mike Arnold. As soon as the motor starts to turn over, I have fire on the plug. Maybe 2 or 3 sparks and then no fire until I switch off the key, at which point I get 2 or 3 more sparks. Any ideas? I have the CDI pictured here. BTW, very happy to have found this website.
